Squires
Beneath the knights are the trainee knights or squires. A knight will choose a squire from the men at arms menagerie who in return for his servitude will teach him fighting skills. A squires duties consist of helping his knight in and out of his armour before and after battles, cleaning the armour, and of course protecting his knight during battle, staying by his side being prepared to die defending him. Also a squire must carry out, without question any menial housekeeping chores he is asked to undertake. Being chosen as a squire is considered a great honour and a bad squire may well find himself demoted back to a common man at arms.
